I saw this home featured on Ready Made and was just completely blown away.  Talk about incorporating your natural surroundings!  They must know how it feels to be an ant now.  Check out this awesome example of “subterranean alpine living.”

Modern Fireplaces

Posted: June 28th, 2010

Even though it’s brutally hot outside, we can still oogle at these gorgeous fireplaces!  Forget massive mantles of granite and wood.  These fireplaces flow elegantly in the middle of rooms and are perfect in transition.  They’re more about elegance than heat production.

Going (Bright) Green

Posted: June 14th, 2010

And we mean that literally.  Here are some awesome examples of bright green creeping into modern living rooms everywhere.

This integration of the wallpaper and couch is brilliantly executed and balanced with lots of white:

I love the small pattern on the window shade and the swirl in chairs along with the green accents all over:

The multiple green shades on this sofa alone add interest to the room:

This room follows the “less is more” rule, with splashes of lime green with a neutal palette:

Open Shelving in Modern Kitchens

Posted: May 24th, 2010

This is becoming an increasingly popular design, especially in remodeled kitchens.  I love the idea of having traditional items on display (vintage pots and milk jugs, for instance) with the integration of modern, stainless steel appliances or marble islands.

Kohler’s Water Wise Competition

The Bold (& Modern) Look of Kohler

Dwell and Kohler have come with a water-wise design competition to bust water wasters.  The winning designer will win $5,000 in Kohler products!  The contest only lasts until June 1st, so you have little time.  Stay tuned and we’ll feature the winning design on sellModern.

Here are the contest rules from Dwell:

How to Enter

A complete entry consists of the following four elements:

  • a completed entry form
  • at least two 3D (and no more than four) renderings of your design in .jpg files
  • a proposed name for your system
  • a brief (no more than 200 words) essay explaining how your system will save water and why it’s necessary for a “water-wise” future

Judging Criteria

Don’t feel fettered by existing technology. Here are the caveats:

  • your system must be unbuilt
  • it must be original
  • it needs to offer a solution to a common water-wasting behavior
  • you must illustrate your idea using 3D imaging software of your creation in use

Modern Doors, hmm.  At last we are renovating our own home in Charleston, SC.  The search begins to source products that are unique and modern in nature.  These products cannot be found on the shelves of large do it yourself stores.  So where do you go?  The Sliding Door Company.

After an exhaustive search for unique interior doors I finally found the right company, who seems to be on their game.  And in fact, the only company I got a response from.  Incredible!

Check out some of these modern door designs:

This is a hard to find swing door, for interior use, the only example I could find in the country, from The Sliding Door Company.

This is a double hung version, which looks great.  Laminated glass is an option which gives you gloss on both sides

of the door.  Another option that I could only find at the Sliding Door Company.

This minimalist modern look is enhanced with huge botanical photographs that flank the fireplace:

And perhaps sometimes you need to be more literal in your interpretation of art:
