Modern Skyscraper in Manhattan

Posted: March 10th, 2009

Jean Nouvel’s design for the Tower Verre in New York City — also known as the MoMA Expansion Tower — is both a marvel of modern architecture and sophisticated practicality. Limited in size by its surroundings and rising high enough to warrant concerns about wind and other airborne challenges, the Tower Verre is comprised of solar panels and steel framing.

The Tower will stand 1,250 feet and house 75 floors.

The building will host galleries, a 5 star hotel, and 8 star residential apartments. Each floor will have 17,000 square feet, with the base spreading for 40,000 square feet.

The Tower Verre is an example of New York’s best modern architecture. But as of December, 2008, the project has been put on hold, due to the current recession.

I hate it. Why do less than creative people get off on all this asymetrical, overtly fluid, and thus dizzying, CAD-inspired garbage? I’m not suggesting a return to Louis Sullivan, but it sure seems like we have not seen any great works of architecture since Frank Ghery’s garbage infiltrated the world in the mid to late 90’s. We’re talking art-about-art, and weird to be weird. Truly “childsplay,” if you ask me, and I’m not talking David Childs, who IMHO, should have been consulted before this crap was allowed to be drawn, let alone posted for human consumption. At least we have established a timeless precident: “How NOT to re-build NYC’s skyline.”

The only unanswered question posed by these despicable renderings; Was Donald Trump’s reign of terror truly as bad as it could ever get?
